history

The building was first mentioned in 1443 as Hof Riegersdorf, which belonged to the Liechtenstein lordship near Judenburg . In 1490 the court went to the Pfanngauer family and the expansion into a Renaissance moated castle began.

After the extinction of the dynasty of Pfanngauer the castle came to Pranckhherren Catzianer and Galler. In 1494 the Liechtensteiners took over the castle again and gave it as a fief to the prank lords, who completed the renovation around 1536.

In 1596 the people of Gabelkhof bought the castle. This family dynasty came from Bavaria to Styria in the 14th century . In 1597 Christof von Gabelkhoven received the fiefdom of the castle from Baron Carl von Teuffenbach. In 1897 Prince Johann von Liechtenstein took it over .

In October 1994 the castle became a hotel.

From 2000 to 2014 the castle was owned by the HMZ private foundation founded by Helmut M. Zoidl and was used as a hotel, seminar center and art gallery. In April 2014 Dietrich Mateschitz bought the property.
