Patronage

Coat of arms of the municipality of Königsfeld with the pilgrim's shell

The Church has its patronage on July 25th (James) and November 25th (Catherine).

The original church patronage of St. Kilian probably went back to the 8th century, when the original parish of Königsfeld belonged to the diocese of Würzburg.

The pilgrim mussel in the coat of arms of the municipality of Königsfeld also commemorates today's church patron James the Elder . Inside the church, a ceiling painting shows the calling of James by Jesus , with the apostle James depicted on the white horse on which, according to legend , he came to the aid of the Christian side in the battle of Avila .

The right side altar is dedicated to the patron saint Catherine of Alexandria . She is shown with a broken wheel as an indication of her ordeal .

history

As a Carolingian royal court , Königsfeld was mentioned for the first time in 741 in a deed of donation to the diocese of Würzburg .

The parish church is located in the middle of a fortified cemetery, the west gate and part of the cemetery walls date back to the Romanesque period. In the Gothic an apse was added to the choir tower in the east . The structure was not built until after the Thirty Years War. In 1710 the tower was integrated into the structure. The tower structure has a so-called Welsche hood .

The coat of arms on the outside of the church belonged to Bishop Marquard Sebastian Schenk von Stauffenberg from Bamberg . The flat ceiling stuccoed with shellwork, angels and religious symbols is the work of the Bamberg plasterer Andreas Lunz. The ceiling paintings made in 1923 show the calling of James through Christ and in the middle the apostle on a white horse who came to the aid of the Christian side in the battle of Avila . The missing ceiling paintings from 1720 were the work of the painter Georg Friedrich, who also worked in Bamberg Cathedral .

Furnishing

A round choir arch connects the nave with the lower floor of the tower, which together with the adjoining apse forms the choir. The keystone of the groin vault is the eye of God . The rococo high altar, which was built around 1766, is located in the actual choir area . In front of the pillars stands the church patron James, who is characterized by his attributes pilgrim staff and shells .

The left side altar (1714/17) shows Mary with the baby Jesus in her arms. To the left of her stands the Holy Empress Kunigunde with a model of a church in her hand, which indicates her position as co-founder of the Bamberg diocese. On the right is Saint Barbara with a chalice and tower. In the extract there is a depiction of God the Father. St. Michael with balance of the soul forms the crown.

pulpit

The right side altar is consecrated to the second patroness of the church, St. Catherine . The broken wheel is an indication of their martyrdom. Katharina is shown wearing a crown because, according to legend, she came from a royal family. Katharina is flanked by St. Ottilie and St. Margaret . Ottilie was able to see again through baptism and is considered the patron saint of the blind, which is indicated by the book with the pair of eyes. Above the excerpt with the dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, stands the figure of St. Sebastian with arrows piercing him.

The pulpit from around 1708 is located on the south wall of the nave. It is also a work by Johann Lauter. The white figures of the four evangelists on the pulpit stand out against the dark background. The sound cover is crowned by the figure of St. George on a pedestal. The pulpit basket is carried on the shoulders by a flower-crowned angel, the so-called Schwerenöter .

To the right of the pulpit is a sculpture of St. Wendelin with a shepherd's staff and a cow. He is considered the patron saint of shepherds and their flocks. Opposite the pulpit is the baroque depiction of Joseph with the baby Jesus from the St. Anna cemetery chapel.

St. John Nepomuk can be seen on the confessional . The baroque stations of the cross run through the whole nave. A so-called Pietà stands under the gallery as a memorial to the fallen.
