Tower Hill Obermelsendorf (Bavaria)
Obermelsendorf tower hill

The Tower Hill Obermelsendorf is an Outbound medieval motte (moth) on the southern edge of Obermelsendorf , a modern suburb of key field in the district of Bamberg in Bavaria . In 1837 the remains of masonry were still visible from the castle, but they were completely removed afterwards. The site is protected as a ground monument number D-4-6229-0003 "Medieval Tower Hill".

history

No concrete historical or archaeological information is known about this Niederungsburg , it is roughly dated to medieval times. However, around 1333/34 the Reichsministeriale von Lauffenholtz , owners of the lower burgesses in Laufamholz and the later Hallerschloss in Mögeldorf , were given fiefs in Obermelsendorf by the Würzburg monastery . Most recently they were in the service of the Bamberg Monastery; in Mögeldorf they kept fiefdoms until they died out in 1568.

description

The square tower hill lies in a swampy valley low and has a diameter of about 25 meters. Its surface is badly churned. The tower hill is surrounded by a 20-meter-wide moat , no remains of a possible wall can be seen. The difference in height between the surface of the hill and the bottom of the trench is two meters.
