history

The castle is probably on the remains of a fortress that around 790 n. Chr. Of Charlemagne was built. The castle was one of the cornerstones of the West and was located on a trade route that led to the Slavic countries. The present castle was first mentioned in a document around 1114. The bishop of Bamberg was then given as the lord of the castle.

In 1620, Prince-Bishop Johann Gottfried I von Aschhausen had the complex rebuilt in its current state. From this time on the castle was a hunting residence and, in addition to a sheep stables, also had a hop garden and a brewery.

In 1803 the castle chapel and the defensive wall-like enclosure of the inner courtyard were torn down. In the years that followed, the inside of the property deteriorated, which was mainly due to the frequently changing owners, until it was made habitable again in 1896 by the royal forester Andreas Eisfelder. After 1945 the castle served as refugee accommodation.

In 1993 the Capella Antiqua Bambergensis leased the property from the owner Dr. Krommer ice fields, which was in bad shape at the time. The rafters was almost completely by dry rot destroyed wooden trestles and woodworm. The floors were also fungal, and the ceilings had collapsed in several places. There was no electricity, no sanitary facilities and no heating. In 1999, in over 30,000 hours of work by the music group, the palace and park were made accessible to the population again.

In 2016 the property was sold to the tenants by the owner's heirs.
