Patronage

inner space

The patron saints of the church are the deacon Laurentius of Rome ( patronage on August 10th) and the holy emperor Heinrich II. (Patronage on July 15th).

Saint Heinrich (left of the tabernacle ) holds a model of Bamberg Cathedral in his right hand , an indication that the church belongs to the diocese of Bamberg .

Saint Lawrence (behind the tabernacle) holds a grate in his left hand as an attribute of his martyrdom , because according to tradition, Laurentius was executed by burning on an iron grate.

location

Cemetery with linden tree

The church stands on a hill above the village and can be seen from afar. It is therefore often used by pilots as a point of orientation.

The church is surrounded by a cemetery which is bordered by a wall. The loopholes uncovered a few years ago refer to the earlier function of the church complex as a fortified church . The cemetery wall is surmounted by a linden tree that is several hundred years old in the northeast corner .

At the edge of the cemetery wall (today the location of the morgue) stood the elementary school until the 1970s, which was replaced in 1953 by a new school building a few meters outside (today the location of the community center).

history

Loopholes in the cemetery wall

The church belongs to the type of fortified churches. The defensive walls around the cemetery and the loopholes are still well preserved from the original fortification . A remnant of the security is also shown in the southern gate, where the bar with which the gate was previously locked can still be seen.

The slate-roofed church building with the massive choir tower from around 1300 also indicates the earlier protective function. There are also loopholes-like window slots in the tower. The crowning of the tower, consisting of two domes with a clad lantern , dates from between 1680 and 1720 and was built under the supervision of the Bamberg cathedral master carpenter Joseph Gruber.

The nave with a flat ceiling and the choir in the tower basement were built between 1690 and 1720.

Furnishing

Pulpit, in the open book: "fides, spes, caritas"
Altars

The high altar from the late Rococo period (around 1770) fills the width of the choir room. In his middle field stands the church patron Laurentius with the rust, the attribute of his martyrdom .

St Laurentius is flanked by statues of the founders of the diocese, St Kunigunde and Holy Emperor Heinrich II .

The left of the side altars dating from around 1710 is dedicated to Mary , the right to her mother Anna . Mary holds the baby Jesus in her arms and stands on a globe with a snake coiled around it. In this allegory the serpent stands for original sin .

The pulpit , built around 1781/82, is the work of Martin Mutschele , who also worked in Königsfeld . The seated female figures with chalice, anchor and burning heart point to the main Christian virtues of faith, hope and love (Latin: fides, spes, caritas). Two angels present the Ten Commandments on the sound cover .
