Akira Koike ( Japanese 小池 晃 , Koike Akira ; born June 9, 1960 in Setagaya , Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician and general secretary of the Communist Party of Japan (CPJ). He has been a member of the Sangiin , the upper house of the Japanese parliament , for national proportional representation since 1998, with one interruption (2010-2013) .

Koike studied at the medical faculty of Tōhoku University and was active in student associations, in 1985 he became vice chairman of Zengakuren . After graduating in 1987, he worked for the Kembun Azusawa Hospital in Itabashi , from 1997 for the Yoyogi Hospital of the Workers' Health Care Tokyo ( Tōkyō Rōdōsha Iryōkai ). In 1998 he became director ( riji ) in the umbrella organization Min'iren (English Japan Federation of Democratic Medical Institutions ).

In 2004 Koike became a member of the CPJ Central Committee and took over the chairmanship of the Political Research Council . In the Sangiin election in the same year he ran on the CPY proportional representation list, received the second highest number of votes behind Secretary General Tadayoshi Ichida and was thus elected for six years. In 2007 he also took over the chairmanship of the CPY faction in the Sangiin. In 2010 he entered the Tokyo Prefecture (five seats), but received only 552,187 votes and thus lost fifth place to Kōta Matsuda ( Minna no Tō ).

In February 2011, he announced his candidacy in the Tokyo Prefecture gubernatorial election in April 2011 . With around ten percent of the vote, he reached fourth place, and with a slight increase in voter turnout, he received roughly the same number of votes as the CPJ candidate Manzo Yoshida, former mayor of Adachi, in the 2007 gubernatorial election.

In the 2013 election, Koike ran again for the Sangiin, but now again in the national proportional representation. He received 134,325 preferential votes and thus number 1 on the list and moved into Sangiin for a third term. In April 2016, he was appointed general secretary of the CPY to succeed Yoshiki Yamashita . In 2019 Koike was re-elected as a member of parliament for another six years with 158,621 votes.
