Kok Nam

Kok Nam (* 1939 in Lourenço Marques ; † August 11, 2012 ibid) was a Mozambican photographer and journalist and was one of the most famous photojournalists in Mozambique of his time.

Life

Kok Nam was born as the son of Chinese farm workers from the Guangzhou region in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo). At the age of 17 he devoted himself to photography for the first time, he worked in the city's Focus photo laboratory , where he already met Ricardo Rangel . He later worked for the newspapers Voz Africana and Diário de Moçambique , then also for Notícias and Notícias da Tarde . Together with other anti-colonial journalists, including Ricardo Rangel, Nam founded the magazine Tempo in 1970 and worked there as a photographer.

Nam stuck to the Tempo even after Mozambique's independence and published a. a. also for the Expresso and The New York Times . In 1981 he founded the Mozambican Association of Photographers ( Associação Moçambicana de Fotografia ) together with Rangel . Together with other Mozambican journalists, Nam founded the media cooperative Mediacoop in 1991/92 , which still publishes the Mediafax and Savana newspapers to this day . In 1994 the editors of the Savana elected him editor-in-chief of the newspaper. Nam held this task until his death. During his time, the newspaper published, among other things, the scandal surrounding embezzled customer accounts of the private bank Banco Mercantil e de Investimentos (BMI) of the Rwandan-American businessman Alfred Kalisa .

Kok Nam died on August 11, 2012 at his home in Maputo at the age of 73 after a long illness.
