Kolbeinseyrücken

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kolbeinseyrücken is an extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge north of Iceland.

The Kolbeinseyrücken is an undersea volcanic mountain range. It is the continuation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the north of Iceland .

The ridge has a length of approximately 500 kilometers and is bounded by two transform faults : to the south by the Tjörnes rupture zone (at 66 degrees north latitude) and to the north by the Jan Mayen rupture zone (at 71 degrees north latitude).

Surname

The ridge is named after the small island of Kolbeinsey .

Known and Suspected Outbreaks

Ash particles found on Kolbeinsey Island are evidence of eruptions in the late Pleistocene , the Ice Age, most recently around 11,800 years ago.

There are reports of a submarine eruption from 1372 northwest of Grímsey Island . The volcanologist Thorarinsson determined the location of this eruption in 1965 at about 66 ° north latitude. Later research (Reidel et al., 2003) showed that the eruption site could be between the Kolbeinseyrücken and the Hóll Seamount .

A high temperature area is located south of Kolbeinsey Island.

Seamount Stóragrunn

Among others, German researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute explored the area between the Tjörnes fracture zone and the Kolbeinseyrücken. They found an undersea volcano that was named Stóragrunn.
