The Koldewey station is a German research station inaugurated on Spitsbergen in August 1991 . The station is in Ny-Ålesund on the Königsfjord . It consists of several buildings.

The station is named after Carl Koldewey , the leader of the First and Second German North Polar Expeditions in 1868 and 1869/70. It has been part of the Franco-German AWIPEV research base since 2003. The Koldewey station is coordinated by the Alfred Wegener Institute , Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research, and the French part of the base is coordinated by the French Polar Institute Paul Émile Victor . AWIPEV includes the buildings at the Koldewey and Rabot stations and Camp Corbel.

The station is designed for research in the fields of biology , chemistry , geophysics and atmospheric physics.

Since 1992, measurements have been carried out at the Koldewey Station as part of the Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC, today NDACC, Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change ), which is responsible for recording changes in the stratosphere . Together with Eureka and Thule , the Koldewey station forms the primary NDACC location for the Arctic.

In 2013, the station was the first meteorological facility in the world to receive the seal of quality from the international climate data network GRUAN ( GCOS Reference Upper Air Network ).
