Kolhapur was a princely state of British India on the heights of the Western Ghats north of Goa in today's state of Maharashtra . Its capital was the place Kolhapur .

history

Shahu

The Marathas -Fürstentum was in 1710 by Shivaji II. From the Bhonsle - dynasty founded in 1730 and finally from Satara separately. Towards the end of the Marathas Wars , Kolhapur became a British protectorate (1812–1947). Raja Shahu I. Bhonsle (1884-1922) was raised to Maharaja in 1900 . In 1941 Kolhapur had an area of ​​8332 km² and 1.1 million inhabitants.

After Great Britain decided on July 18, 1947 to give India and Pakistan independence (see History of India ), Kolhapur initially became independent and did not join the United Deccan States . Only on March 1, 1949 did the last Maharaja Chhatrapati Shahaji II Puar, who was also Maharaja of Dewas Senior, join India and the state of Bombay , from which the state of Maharashtra emerged on May 1, 1960 .
