Coat of arms of those of Kolmatsch

Kolmatsch is the name of a former noble family in Thuringia and Lower Hesse . The name of the sex can be found in documents and historical treatises in multiple variations: Kolmatz , Kolmetz , Kolmacz , Kolmas , Colmasch , Colmas , Colmast , Colmaz , Colmacz , Colmaez , Kolmetsch , Colmetze , Kolmetze , Kolmitzsch , Colmetsch , Collmetsch , Colmatsch , Kolmatzsch , Calmatzsch , Kolmitz , Colmyczs and Culmitsch . The members of the family were feudal men of the Counts of Henneberg, the Landgraves of Thuringia and the Landgraves of Hesse .

history

The family probably comes from the former village of Culmitzsch near Weida , where the family belonged to the service aristocracy of the Mildenfurth monastery . With the 1267 knight Heinrich von Colmas ( Henricus miles de Colmas ) named as a witness in a document of the Weidaer Vogtes , the sex becomes tangible for the first time. He was a follower of Albrecht II of Meißen , the Landgrave of Thuringia and Count Palatine of Saxony, became Vogt in Lupnitz near Eisenach , and appeared several times as a witness in Albrecht's documents and at times as a minstrel at the landgrave's court. In the literature of the 19th century he was mistakenly regarded as an Alsatian knight from Colmar .

His descendants settled in the Hessian-Thuringian border area near Eisenach , where they acquired considerable property. With the Landgrave Hessian governor in Upper Hesse Georg von Kolmatsch († 1552) the dynasty reached its zenith, but soon died out.

It is unclear whether the Knights of Colmas, attested from the early 14th century as ministerials and feudal men of the Silesian dukes of Breslau , Falkenberg , Oppeln and Strehlitz , represent a branch of the same sex.
