Columbarium Riensberger Friedhof
The Columbarium Riensberger Friedhof in Bremen - Schwachhausen , Friedhofstraße 51, on the banks of the large lake of the Riensberger Friedhof is a listed building .
history
The Riensberg cemetery was laid out from 1872 to 1875 according to plans by the landscape gardener Jancke from Aachen, and from 1880 onwards it was designed as a landscaped park according to plans by Wilhelm Benque .
The single-storey, former Riensberg crematorium was built from 1903 to 1906 according to plans by Heinrich Wilhelm Behrens for the Cremation Association . The turn-of-the-century building in the style of neoclassicism is characterized by a classicistic portico with four Ionic , fluted columns that support the entablature with architrave and simple frieze and cornice with tooth cut as well as the tympanum . The celebration hall in the central building with the round, copper-covered dome has many Art Nouveau elements . It was the first crematorium in northern Germany.
In 1927 the building was expanded. In 1988 it was decommissioned as a crematorium because it was technically out of date.
Since 2002 the building, which has been converted inside, has served as a columbarium (Latin columbarium = dovecote ), as a burial place for urns. In the dome-like hall there are 326 niches with grave slabs made of glass or sandstone. Access to the urn room is only possible with a personal access authorization.
Monument protection
In 2000 the buildings were listed as a cultural monument in Bremen .
