history

Before 1974 Büyükkonuk was inhabited by Cypriot Turks and Cypriot Greeks. The Greeks made up the majority in the village. In 1973 Büyükkonuk had 762 residents, 200 of whom were Cypriot Turks and 562 Cypriot Greeks. 66 students were enrolled in the village's Greek primary school for the 1973/74 academic year. Many of the Greek Cypriot residents fled to the south of the island after the Turkish forces invaded the island in 1974 . Jack Goodwin counted 155 Cypriot Greeks in November 1975 who continued to live in the village. They left the village, so that in December 1976 no more Greek Cypriots could be counted in the village.

Today in Büyükkonuk there are Cypriot Turks who already lived in the town, as well as some who have settled from the Paphos district. There are also settlers from Turkey. In 2006 there were 1,109 Cypriot Turks, in 2011 there were 811.
