history

The completely neglected church near Sazlıköy dates from the 12th century

The Orthodox cross- domed church Panagia tis Kyras was built near the village of Livadia in the 12th century , but it was looted after 1974.

In the time of the Ottoman rule (1570 / 71–1878), censuses were carried out for the purpose of tax collection, such as in 1831. In Livadia, as the place was called by the Greeks, or in Sazlıköy, as it was called by the Turkish side , 43 Turkish and 9 Greek heads of household counted. In 1891 the British colonial authorities had 115 inhabitants, of whom 89 were Turks and 26 Greeks. In 1901 there were 20 fewer inhabitants, of whom 76 were Turks and 19 Greeks. Thereafter, the number of Turks slowly increased while the number of Cypriot Greeks decreased. In 1931 there were 116 Turks and four Greeks, in 1946 only Cypriot Turks lived in the village, namely 180, in 1960 there were 191. In 1958 and 1964 the place accepted refugee Turks, mainly from Ayios Theodoros / Çayırova and from Arnadi / Kuzucuk . In 1971 nine of these were still living in the village, which at that time had a population of 210. The 1960 census counted 191 Cypriot Turks, in 1978 there were 165.

Sazlıköy, which was already exclusively inhabited by Cypriot Turks before the end of the Second World War , took in again refugees from other villages between 1964 and 1974, during the time of the Turkish administration of Cyprus , and therefore as part of the Turkish enclave of Mehmetçik.

Since then, the younger people in the village have been migrating to the larger towns and abroad, so that the population has shrunk since then. In 2006 there were 96 residents, but in 2011 there were only 44.
