history

Commandant's House 1737

The house was built around 1500 by a Gabriel von Schneen . After the Battle of Lutter in the Thirty Years War , Tilly lived here from August 3, 1626 after the city was taken. The commandant's house gained new importance in the course of the founding of the Georg August University from 1734 to 1737 and as the residence of the government officials from Hanover. It was completely renovated in the years 1730–31, the rear building was even completely rebuilt and so it was considered the most comfortable house on the square when the university was founded. The picture of an elevator of the Göttingen students in front of the commandant's house secured by sentries has been preserved for the minister and university founder Gerlach Adolph von Münchhausen on the occasion of the inauguration of the University of Göttingen around September 16, 1737 at Weender Straße 32 / Barfüßerstraße. On the right on the other corner is the Rats-Apotheke, which existed until 2014 . At that time, the Hanoverian military in Göttingen was under the command of the colonel and later general, city and fortress commander, Johann August von Druchtleben . The picture shows the permanent sentinels with their sentry boxes in front of the house and four envoys from the students in front of the door. Further at a distance in the middle of the semicircle a band and torchbearers in the inner semicircle. The students wear rococo uniforms based on officers' uniforms in the colors of their country teams . For the period before 1750, the Hanoverian (red / blue), Braunschweiger (blue / black) and Westphalia (green / black) country teams are known in Göttingen; other country teams such as Mecklenburg and Kurland were only added after the Seven Years' War . The adjutants general in white trousers carry a kind of marshal's baton and secure the elevator. Since v. Münchhausen was the Hanoverian minister, the red uniforms of the adjutants indicate a main responsibility of the Hanoverian Landsmannschaft.

Subsequent development around 1850 before the further addition

As early as the middle of the 19th century, the commandant's house was replaced by a new building, which was later extended.
