Kommeno ( Greek Κομμένο ( n. Sg. )) Is a village in the same district of the municipality Nikolaos Skoufas the west of the Greek mainland in the region of Epirus . Kommeno is located south of the city of Arta, east of the mouth of the Arachthos River in the Ambrakia Gulf . The local community Kommeno with a total of 769 inhabitants consists of the two villages Kommeno with 626 inhabitants and Neos Synikismos (Νέος Συνοικισμός) with 143 inhabitants.

History of the village

From 1912 to 2010, Kommeno formed an independent rural community (kinotita), with the administrative reform of 2010 it was merged with three other communities to form the new community of Nikolaos Skoufas , where it has since formed a district and has the status of a local community.

In Kommeno, 317 residents were murdered by the Wehrmacht on August 16, 1943 . There were 172 women and 145 men. 97 of the murdered were younger than 15 years, 14 older than 65 years and 13 people were around one year old. The action of a company of the 1st Mountain Division under the command of Lieutenant Willibald Röser was not, as usual, a retaliation for a guerrilla attack . The reason was that on August 14, 1943, some resistance fighters had collected food in the village. Major Reinhold Klebe was in charge of the operational management of this mass murder . Lieutenant Colonel Josef Salminger was also involved .

Since 2008 there has been a drum workshop (Κρουστοπανήγυρις) in and around Kommeno on the initiative of Nick Touliatos. Günter “Baby” Sommer has been involved among the numerous foreign artists for many years; his album "Songs for Kommeno" was performed at the jazz festivals in Berlin, Zurich and Vienna.
