Commission for Dialect and Name Research in Westphalia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Westphalian Dialect and Name Research Commission (KoMuNa) is a scientific committee of the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe (LWL). Alongside the Literature Commission for Westphalia , the Antiquities Commission for Westphalia , the Geographical Commission for Westphalia , the Historical Commission for Westphalia and the Commission for Everyday Culture Research for Westphalia, it is one of the LWL's six scientific commissions for regional studies.

The commission for dialect and name research, founded in 1972, has the task of promoting linguistic and literary research in Westphalia through studies, publications and collections. A work and research center that issues numerous publications, organizes conferences and lectures and offers a steadily growing internet portal for Westphalian linguistic research serves to implement their tasks. KoMuNa currently has 43 elected members.

history

The starting point for the establishment was the founding of the “Westphalian Provincial Dictionary” (today “Westphalian Dictionary”) in 1927 by the then provincial administration. A year later, the Folklore Commission for Westphalia was set up to provide institutional security for the dictionary. It was later divided into the “Folklore Department” and the “Dialect and Name Research Department”. Due to the expansion of tasks and projects as well as the differentiated subject-specific development within folklore and linguistics, both departments were appointed independent commissions in 1972. The KoMuNa works closely with the German Institute of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . The KoMuNa office currently employs three academic consultants, one academic volunteer, one administrative employee and five student volunteers. Annual reports with current information about publications and events of the KoMuNa appear in "Westfälische Forschungen. Journal of the LWL Institute for Westphalian Regional History ” .
