The Compass Card GmbH is an Austrian card publisher of Innsbruck , the on hiking maps , hiking guides specialized, digital maps, cycling maps and cycling guides. The program is over 1000 titles.

The publishing house was founded in December 1953 by Heinz Fleischmann under the name Fleischmann KG - KOMPASS Karten in Bavaria. In 1968, Mairs Geografischer Verlag became a partner in the company that was now called Fleischmann & Mair GmbH . In 1996 the publishing house became a subsidiary of the MairDumont publishing group and the company name was changed to Kompass Karten GmbH . The Tyrolean hiking map publisher Walter Mayr has been part of KOMPASS Karten GmbH since 2002 .

In 2011, the company had sales of around EUR 12 million.

Products

KOMPASS has around 1000 publisher titles in its range, including 700 hiking, cycling and ski touring maps. The almost 500 hiking maps issued cover the hiking areas of Austria, South Tyrol , Germany , the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands . Hiking areas in the rest of Italy , the Swiss Alps , the Czech Republic and Slovakia are partially covered. The maps are usually available in a scale of 1: 25,000 or 1: 50,000, with highlighted hiking trails and additional tourist information. The new generation of hiking maps is provided with a coordinate network for GPS navigation. Since the middle of 2011, weatherproof and tear-proof cards have been gradually being printed - existing cards are being replaced by them.

KOMPASS-Verlag has almost fifty digital maps in its range, including all of Austria, some hiking areas in Germany, South Tyrol, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Malta and Elba . The digital maps can be used on PDAs and mobile phones with Java technology for outdoor navigation . The map material has a scale of 1: 50,000 and can be zoomed up to a scale of 1: 10,000.

A series of cycle maps on a scale of 1: 70,000 has been on the market since 2009. A bicycle guide series was published in 2011. Both series are printed on tear and weatherproof paper.

The publisher also publishes hiking atlases, nature guides, panoramas, cookbooks and ski tour guides.

Awards

  • In May 2007 KOMPASS Verlag was awarded the Tyrolean coat of arms.
  • In March 2008, the 3D outdoor maps from KOMPASS were awarded the ITB Award 2008 as the best tourist cartography.
  • In March 2010, the KOMPASS hiking map series received first place at the ITB in Berlin.
  • In 2012, the KOMPASS bicycle guide series was awarded the ITB BookAward at the ITB in the “Cycling, Cartography” category.
