The Konfederatka (also rogatywka in Polish , "corner cap") is a traditional cap of the Poles . It is also used as a military headgear .

history

The high Konfederatka was worn by Polish Uhlans who fought for Napoleon Bonaparte in the Polish Legion during the coalition wars. It became the model for the Tschapka throughout Europe . It is believed to have originated from the traditional headgear used by farmers in the area around Kraków , known as krakuska and of a lower height.

The Konfederatka typically has a square lid. At the bottom it is often trimmed with fur or has a particularly high bonnet, which is used in military applications to attach various badges.

Modern frames have a black leather visor, over which a folded chin strap runs.

Today's Konfederatka

The hat was used at different stages of history as an expression of Polish national sentiment. For example during the uprising against Russia in 1830 ( November uprising ) and during the revolutionary times around 1848.

After the Second World War, the cap was abolished as a uniform component by the communists , but was reintroduced by General Jaruzelski in the 1980s. In 1961 the so-called field cap was introduced, which was made from the same material as the field uniform. In addition to the military, this cap was also used by the Milicja Obywatelska and the fire brigade. In the 1990s, however, this was replaced by the beret in the military .

In the years during and after the Napoleonic Wars up to around 1820, the Konfederatka was also worn as part of the student costume in Germany. In Königsberg i. It was widely used as a student cap until the 1850s .
