The epitaph of Konrad Hartmann in the monastery church

Konrad II. Hartmann (* in Schweinfurt ; † January 9, 1551 in Ebrach ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1540 to 1551 .

Life

Konrad II. Hartmann was probably born at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century in the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt. Nothing is known about the parents of the future abbot, nor is Konrad's schooling mentioned in the sources. He entered the Ebrach monastery around 1511, as he had already been a monk for 29 years when he was to be ordained abbot in 1540 . Konrad Hartmann held some monastery offices, so he was bursarius of the abbey.

After the death of his predecessor John III. Wolf in the second half of 1540, Hartmann was elected on October 21, 1540 as the thirty-second abbot of Ebrach. He had stayed in the monastery during the Peasants' War and now quickly set about completing the reconstruction, which was still not fully completed. Above all, the destroyed buildings of the monastery were rebuilt by the prelate .

At the same time, however, the continually fermenting conflict with the Würzburg prince-bishops began to break out again. Bishop Melchior Zobel von Giebelstadt disrupted the rebuilding of the abbey. Thereupon the abbot filed a complaint with Emperor Charles V , who warned the prince-bishop in 1544. Nevertheless, the Würzburger did not adhere to it and continued to interrupt the construction work. Konrad Hartmann has now initiated a process before the Reich Chamber of Commerce . He died on January 9, 1551.
