Konrad von Bärenfels (* around 1305 ; † 1372 in Basel ) was the mayor of Basel.

Life

Knight Konrad von Bärenfels was born as the son of Johannes von Bärenfels († around 1314), mayor in Kleinbasel , and his wife Margarita von Hertenberg . The ancestors came from Brombach ; his grandfather Werner, Vogt von Brombach and, around 1290, mayor of Kleinbasel, the progenitor of the Lords of Bärenfels . He still had three brothers:

  • Werner I. von Bärenfels († October 18, 1356 in Basel), nobleman ;
  • Arnold von Bärenfels, clergyman in Basel;
  • Johann III. von Bärenfels, had police power as a council servant in Basel.

Konrad von Bärenfels was mayor of Basel in Gross- and Kleinbasel as well as in 1334 and in the years 1338 to 1364, alternating with knight Konrad Münch as well as with members of the Schaler and Reich families. During his reign, the earthquake in Basel fell on October 18, 1356, in which one of his brothers was killed when he was struck by a tin crown in St. Peter's Church .

With the Basel bishop Johann Senn von Münsingen he traveled in 1335/36 to see Pope Benedict XII. to Avignon and otherwise often worked as a mediator, arbitrator, surety and representative in business and disputes of cities, nobles and princes.

Konrad von Bärenfels was married and had four sons, of whom we know by name:

Three of his sons died on July 9, 1386 in the Battle of Sempach for Duke Leopold III. of Habsburg .
