Pawel Nikolajewitsch Cholopow ( Russian Павел Николаевич Холопов ; born June 6, 1922 in Ust-Syssolsk , † April 13, 1988 in Moscow ) was a Russian astronomer and university professor .

Life

Cholopov studied in the astronomical department of the mechanical - mathematical faculty of the Lomonosov University Moscow (MGU) with graduation in 1946. He then became a research assistant in the Astronomical Council of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN )). In 1953 he received his doctorate as a candidate in physical-mathematical sciences . Cholopov's main research interests were variable stars and star clusters . From 1946 he participated in the cataloging of the variable stars.

In 1960 Cholopow moved to the Sternberg Institute for Astronomy (GAISch) at MGU and headed the department for variable stars. There, together with Boris Wassiljewitsch Kukarkin, he led the cataloging of Variable Stars, which led to the General Catalog of Variable Stars . After Kukarkin's death, he continued the work. When in 1978 the variable stars division was merged with the galaxies division , Cholopov remained head of the merged division. He also taught at the MGU. He was a doctor of physical and mathematical sciences and a professor . Yuri Nikolayevich Yefremov was one of his students.

Cholopow developed a method for determining and numerically characterizing the spatial star density in globular clusters . He examined the structures of a large number of globular and open star clusters . He found uniform structures in the different star clusters. He looked critically at the problem of the dynamic evolution of the star groupings and formulated arguments for the stability of the star clusters NGC 6231 , Chi Persei , h Persei , the star system θ1-Orionis and others. With the results of his investigations he determined the beginning of the main sequence of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram . He studied a large number of variable stars, especially young objects in a diffuse environment. He developed a method for determining the periods of the variable stars with the computer. He was a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and worked on its commissions for 27 Variable Stars and 37 Star Clusters & Associations .

Cholopov was buried in the Wagankowo Cemetery .

Cholopov is named for the asteroid (70418) Kholopov .
