Yuri Nikolajewitsch Jefremow ( Russian Юрий Николаевич Ефремов ; born May 11, 1937 in Moscow ; † August 26, 2019 ) was a Russian astronomer .

Life

After graduating from school in 1955 with a silver medal, Yefremov studied in the astronomical department of the mechanical - mathematical faculty of the Lomonosov University in Moscow (MGU). In 1960 he became a research assistant in the Astronomical Council of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)). In 1967 he defended his candidate dissertation on the basic properties of the classical Cepheids .

1973 Jefremow became an employee of the Sternberg Institute for Astronomy (GAISch) of the MGU. Under the direction of Boris Wassiljewitsch Kukarkins and Pawel Nikolajewitsch Cholopows he created catalogs of the variable stars , which led to the General Catalog of Variable Stars . He discovered the fluctuations in brightness of quasars . He studied the evolution of stars and star groupings and the structures of galaxies . He became known through the discovery of the dependence of the brightness periods of the Cepheids on their age. He investigated the larger groupings of young stars, which he called star complexes and which he takes to be the cells of star formation in huge gas clouds. In 1983 he defended his doctoral thesis on Cepheids and star groups.

In 1989, Yefremov became head of the Galaxies and Variable Stars Department of the GAISch. In 2000 he became the main scientific collaborator of the GAISch. He is the author of around 200 scientific publications.

Jefremow was deputy editor-in-chief of the bulletin In Defense of Science of the RAN Commission for the Fight Against Unscientific Research and Counterfeiting, which was founded in 1998 on the initiative of Vitaly Lazarevich Ginsburg . He published a number of articles in the mass media against the New Chronology of Anatoly Timofejewitsch Fomenkos and Gleb Vladimirovich Nossowskis . He considers the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations possible and believes in the possibility of establishing contact in the foreseeable future. He was a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). He was an advocate of scientism .

The name of the asteroid (12975) Efremov bears Jefremov .
