Konstantin Angelos Dukas ( Middle Greek Κωνσταντίνος Άγγελος Δούκας ; * around 1173, † after 1193) was a Byzantine general and usurper against Emperor Isaac II.

Life

Konstantin Angelos Dukas was a grandson of Admiral Konstantin Angelos and Theodora Komnena , a daughter of Emperor Alexios I and Irene Dukaina . His cousin Isaac II appointed him Dux of Crete at a young age . Since 1192 Strategos of Philippople , the ambitious Constantine took over command of the Byzantine troops in the late phase of the war against the Bulgarians (1186–1197) . After having several skirmishes against the Tsar Theodor-Peter had won, he had himself proclaimed emperor in 1193 against the concerns of his advisors in Philippopel. He and his followers moved against Adrianople , but was then captured by his own officers and handed over to Isaac II, who blinded him. As a result, the Bulgarians under Ivan Assen I and the Cumans allied with them regained the initiative, penetrated deep into Thrace and defeated the Byzantines at Arcadiopolis in 1194 .
