The entrained flow gasification after the Koppers-Totzek process and after the Shell-Koppers method was developed by Koppers.

history

The company was founded in 1901 by Heinrich Koppers . Before that he worked for the coking plant company Dr. C. Otto & Comp. (later one of the fiercest competitors) and Hugo Stinnes . Koppers had developed various processes and designs for Otto . He started his own business in order to exploit and develop the patents that he had registered with Otto and Stinnes during his time.

The superiority of Kopper's construction quickly became apparent and his company grew rapidly from 1904 onwards. For many years, Koppers was a global leader in coal technology and built a large number of coking plants and other plants in Germany and around the world.

The Koppers-Totzek process for coal gasification , which was developed in 1938 by Koppers and his colleague Friedrich Totzek , was only used in experimental plants after the Second World War from 1947 and quickly developed into success. As a result, Koppers built several large systems of this type and types derived from it.

After Heinrich Koppers' death in 1941, the company was continued by his son Hans Heinrich Koppers, among others. The company later ran into financial difficulties, was taken over by Krupp in 1974 ( Krupp Koppers , later ThyssenKrupp EnCoke ) and is now part of ThyssenKrupp Uhde GmbH .

Offshoot

In 1912 Koppers founded a subsidiary in the USA, Koppers Inc. in Chicago . This processed the numerous orders that Koppers had received from US Steel . Heinrich Koppers later sold the company with the associated patents to the investor and later US Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon , under whose ownership it moved to Pittsburgh . The Koppers Inc. still exists today and is active in the coal chemistry.

An offshoot of the Koppers Inc. is the subsidiary was founded in 1960 Sigdo Koppers in Chile . In 1974 it was sold and today Sigdo Koppers is a highly diversified conglomerate and one of the largest companies in Chile.
