The coral dogfish ( Atelomycterus marmoratus ) belongs to the order of the ground sharks (Carcharhiniformes) and to the family of dogfish (Scyliorhinidae).
Occurrence
The nocturnal fish lives in the Arabian Sea , on the coasts of India to the Bay of Bengal , on the Sumatra coast , near Thailand , in the South China Sea and off the coast of Papua New Guinea . Most of the time, the shark is close to the coast. Since this species is mainly in caves and other shelters during the day, it is only found at night. Every now and then you can find him in search of food in tide pools.
food
The dogfish feed mainly on fry, shrimp , other small fish and crabs , but also on snails and mussels and small octopuses .
Appearance
The coral cat shark can be easily distinguished from its conspecifics by its appearance. It becomes up to 90 cm long. Its head is elongated and resembles that of a snake. There is a spray hole directly behind his eyes and he has 5 gills . There are two dorsal fins on its back. The caudal fins have receded in the lower part. The coral cat shark has a striking coloration. On the brown ground color there are small, light spots with dark borders. The belly is also light-colored and the tips of the fins are marked in white on all seams.
Reproduction
The dogfish lays eggs ( oviparous ). The egg shell is approx. 7 cm × 3 cm. At birth, the young are about 10 cm long.
