Bodywork

Corpus works are a genre of cultural-historical scientific literature : the mostly multi-volume, large-format and continuously illustrated catalogs of real objects from a historically and regionally narrowly defined subject. They are designed to be complete and deal with a historically closed, mostly distant subject area. Their creation is based on years, mostly even decades, of collecting and research work, usually institutionally supported. The work on the sarcophagus corpus ( The ancient sarcophagus reliefs ), for example, has been going on for 150 years, and that on the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum even longer.

For example, there are (archaeological) corpus works for megalithic graves, cuneiform tablets, prehistoric finds, Egyptian papyri, ancient vase paintings , Latin inscriptions , (more often) for certain types of coins, seals or orders, medieval bronze works, glass paintings , panel paintings and sculptures, geographical abbreviations and astronomy individual picture motifs and the paintings of individual artists (e.g. Rembrandt or Picasso ), baroque ceiling and wall paintings, picture and other manuscripts as well as architectural monuments.

Collections of old literary, theological (for example the text editions of the Patristicians or the set of sentences by Petrus Lombardus ) or legal texts (for example those of Roman civil law ) often have the term corpus in the title. The preferred technical term for this genre, however, is text corpus .

The elaboration and publication of corpus works is basic research and today it is often organized in the Academies of Sciences .

Because of the enormous amount of data collected, some projects - such as the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum - are now supplemented by online databases . Newly conceived projects such as the corpus of baroque ceiling painting in Germany include computer-aided methods in the sense of digital humanities from the outset . The basic idea that has always determined the corpus works, that the most comprehensive or complete availability and knowledge of the (written or real) sources is the basic requirement for further research, remains valid. Rather, this approach is given even greater weight by the new options for displaying the content, for dealing with large amounts of data and for researching them (for example full-text search or linked database queries).
