Orrefors Kosta Boda AB is an amalgamation of the formerly independent glassworks Orrefors, Kosta, Boda and Åfors, located in the so-called Kingdom of Crystal in the southern Swedish province of Småland . The company has been part of New Wave Group AB since 2005 .

Orrefors glassworks

Orrefors glasbruk is located in Orrefors in Nybro municipality . The glassworks was founded in 1898, but had existed as an ironworks since 1726. When the smelting of iron became unprofitable, the production of medical and technical glass as well as household glass began. From 1914 crystal glass was also produced.

During the First World War, the two artists Simon Gate (at Orrefors 1916–1945) and Edward Hald (at Orrefors 1917–1978) established the company's world fame with innovative techniques such as Graal (multi-colored blank, a base in several layers of paint, is sandblasted or Bows decorated with ornaments) and Ariel . In 1954, Sven Palmqvist (1906–1984) presented his Fuga bowl series , which was made from centrifuged glass, a world first in glass technology. The Orrefors glassworks has been closed since mid-July 2013.

Kosta Glashütte

Kosta glasbruk is located in the municipality of Lessebo . The smelter is the oldest operating glassworks in Sweden. It was founded in 1742 by Anders Koskull and Georg Bogislaus Staël von Holstein . The name of the hut and the place is formed from the first letters of the two surnames. At first, window and bottle glass was made. At the end of the 19th century, Kosta was mainly known for its cut glass. Important glass artists included Ewald Dahlskog (1894–1950) and Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983). In 1990 the Kosta glassworks merged with that of Boda. Today the Kosta glascenter and an outlet exist .

Boda glassworks

Boda glasbruk is located in the municipality of Emmaboda and was founded in 1864. At the beginning, the products mainly consisted of simple glass for use, later also of cut crystal glass. The hut became known in the 1960s through the work of Erik Höglund and Signe Persson-Melin , and later through the designs of Kjell Engman and Anna Ehrner .

Åfors glassworks

To Orrefors Kosta Boda AB also includes the small glassworks Åfors glasbruk . It was founded in 1876 by Carl-Albert Fagerlund in Åfors in Emmaboda municipality. Initially, it was made of household glass. In the early 1960s brought the couple Bertil Vallien and Ulrica Hydman-Vallien with their experimental glass art works new life into the company.
