Werner von Selchow

Werner Ludolph Erdmann von Selchow (born February 1, 1806 in Danzig , † February 23, 1884 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) was a Prussian Minister of Agriculture .

Life

origin

He came from the noble New Mark family von Selchow . His parents were Friedrich Wilhelm von Selchow (1769–1845) and Friederike Ludowika Amalie, geb. von Kummer (1783–1864).

Career

Selchow studied law . In 1828 he was a court trainee in Danzig, then in Marienwerder. He owned a manor in Rettkewitz . From 1843 to 1845 he was district administrator of the Lauenburg-Bütow district , after its division from 1846 to 1851 district administrator of the newly formed Lauenburg district .

In 1848/49 he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly for the 1st constituency of the province of Pomerania ( Lauenburg ). There he belonged to the casino faction and later to the Café Milani faction .

He then moved from the provinces to Berlin, in 1849 he was an "unskilled worker" (a kind of assistant) in the Prussian Ministry of the Interior. In 1850 Selchow was a member of the Volkshaus of the Erfurt Union . He was also a member of the Right in the second chamber of the Prussian House of Representatives until 1852 . He belonged to the House of Representatives again from 1863 to 1870, he did not join any parliamentary group.

In 1851 he went back to the provinces; initially as vice-president of the government in Liegnitz , from 1853 to 1855 district president in Liegnitz. From 1856 to 1862 he was the district president in Frankfurt an der Oder , in 1862 he became the chief president of the province of Brandenburg and a member of the Prussian State Council .

In December 1862 he was appointed Minister of Agriculture to the first ministry of the new Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck . He held this position until his retirement in 1873. From 1863 to 1870 he was again a member of the House of Representatives (rights, non-attached).

After his retirement he settled on Gut Karolinenthal near Rettkewitz , Lauenburg district in Pomerania ; In 1874 he acted there as head of the newly formed district of Rettkewitz .

Marriage and offspring

His wife Karoline (née von Hanstein) gave birth to ten children, eight daughters and two sons.

His granddaughter Anni von Gottberg was a member of the Confessing Church during the National Socialist era .

Others

Selchowstrasse in Berlin-Schmargendorf is named after him; possibly he is also the namesake for a street in Berlin-Adlershof .
