Ewald Albin Filip Dahlskog (born April 24, 1894 in Stockholm , † September 25, 1950 in Gävle ) was a versatile Swedish artist who was mainly active in the field of applied arts . He became known in particular for his inlay work in public buildings.

Live and act

Ewald Dahlskog was born the son of a book printer and grew up in Stockholm. He became interested in art early on and began attending art classes at relevant universities as a schoolboy. From 1905 to 1908 he trained as a lithographer at Centraltryckeriet in Stockholm. He then studied from 1908 to 1912 at the Stockholm Tekniska skolan (German technical school), today's Konstfack Academy of Art , and from 1913 to 1917 at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm .

In 1914 he completed his military service with the Svea Livgarde . In 1918 he received a travel grant from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts , and from 1920 to 1922 he went on a study trip to France and Italy . In 1924 he went to Paris for the Swedish newspaper Stockholms-Tidningen , where he rented a studio and, as a journalist and illustrator, reported, among other things, on the 1924 Summer Olympics there . From 1926 to 1929 he was an artistic assistant at the Swedish glassworks Orrefors Kosta Boda , for which he held joint exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City . He then worked as an artistic collaborator for the Swedish ceramic manufacturer Boberg Fajansfabrik AB in Gävle until his death . In 1936 he was co-initiator of an aid fund for Swedish artists.

Dahlskog's focus was on handicrafts and design , he worked, among other things, as a cabinet maker , glass artist , ceramist , artisan, designer and industrial designer and occasionally as a painter . As an artisan, Dahlskog was very versatile; best known are his artistically designed inlays in public buildings, such as the Stockholm Konserthuset built in 1924–1926 and the Silent Film Palace and later revue theater Chinateatern , which was built in 1926–1928 directly on Berzelii Park in the Norrmalm district in the center of the Swedish capital. His work as a painter is less well known. Stylistically, Dahlskog is assigned to the New Objectivity and is one of its leading representatives in Scandinavia .

Ewald Dahlskog had been married since 1919.
