The Eshkol Power Station is a combined oil and gas power plant in Israel , which, on the Mediterranean coast in the northern industrial zone of the city of Ashdod at the mouth of the river Lakhish is. With an installed capacity of 1,449 GW (as of 2014) it is the third largest power plant in Israel and contributes 7.3% to the nationwide electricity supply. It is the first power plant in Israel that has been expanded to include natural gas for environmental reasons. The facility is named after the former Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol .
The power plant was commissioned in 1958 with an initial output of 145 MW. As of 2014, the plant comprises a combination of steam turbines and gas turbines with a total output of 1,449 GW. Seawater from the Mediterranean Sea is used for cooling, for which a separate seawater desalination plant is connected to the power plant.
