The Gameiro power plant ( Portuguese Barragem do Gameiro ) is a run-of-river power plant on the Raia River , which is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Évora district . The small town of Mora is about four kilometers west of the power plant.

The project to build the power plant began in 1957. The construction was completed in 1960. In addition to irrigation, the building is also used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários do Vale do Sorraia .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a dam on the right and a concrete gravity dam on the left. The height of the structure is 20 m above the foundation level (16 m above the river bed). The crown of the building is at a height of 68 m above sea level . The length of the building crown is 293 m and its width 4 m. The volume of the dam is 39,000 m³, the volume of the dam is 11,000 m³.

The dam wall is divided into an engine house on the left side of the river and a weir system with flood relief , consisting of four gates through which a maximum of 2,200 m³ / s can be discharged. The dam also has a bottom outlet through which a maximum of 7 m³ / s can be discharged. The design flood is 2,800 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 500 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 62 m (maximum 65 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.072 km² and holds 1.3 million m³ of water. The minimum congestion destination is 58 m.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 0.46  MW , the Gameiro power plant is one of the smallest hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual generation is 0.54 (or 2.86) million kWh .

The Kaplan turbine was supplied by Voith . At a height of fall of 11.6 m, it provides 0.268 MW and at a height of 16 m 0.46 MW, while the associated generator has a maximum output of 0.55  MVA . The rated speed of the turbine is 750 rpm. The nominal voltage of the generator is 400  volts . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 0.4 kV to 15 kV by means of a power transformer.
