The Matla Power Station (English: Matla Power Station ) is a coal fired power plant of the state-owned South African power utility Eskom with an installed capacity of 3.6 GW , which the base load supply is used in the country. Matla is the oldest of the large six-block coal-fired power plants in South Africa. Matla is a Sesotho word that means strength or achievement .
investment
Located about 110 km east of Johannesburg near Secunda in the Mpumalanga Province , the plant consists of six 600 MW units that went into operation between 1979 and 1983. Matla is one of the few power plants in the world that used concrete instead of steel for the shell of the boiler house . Concrete cut lead time to construction and was more cost effective at a time when steel was in short supply in the world market. All units are equipped with MAN turbines and Alstom generators , the boilers are from Babcock .
Coal mine
The coal comes from belonging to the power station Matla coal mine where the coal during the day with continuous miner in Kurzstrebbau is obtained. The seams lie at an average depth of 48 to 105 meters. A conveyor belt transports up to 3800 tons of coal to the power plant every hour. The coal mine operated by Exxaro employs 2500 people.
