The Waneta power plant ( English Waneta dam ) is a run-of-river power plant on Pend Oreille in British Columbia at the confluence with the Columbia River . It has an installed capacity of 627.5 MW and was built by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada ( Cominco ) from 1951 to 1954 to provide electricity for the lead-zinc smelter in Trail, 15 km away .
From 2010 to 2015, the power plant was expanded by two more turbines with a total output of 335 MW for $ 900 million.
