The Witznau power plant is a pumped storage power plant and represents the middle tier of the Schluchseewerke group consisting of three power plants . It is located just before the mouth of the Schwarzatal and Schlüchttal near Witznau, a district of Ühlingen-Birkendorf , in the southern Black Forest . With 220 MW of generating capacity and 128 MW of pumping capacity, it is the largest of the three power plants within the Schluchsee plant group.

The power plant is located directly below the Witznautalsperre and forms a unit with it. In generator mode, 133 cubic meters of water per second are supplied from the Schwarza Basin 250 m higher via a 9255 m long pressure tunnel , which then flows into the Witznau Basin , which serves as the lower basin . 40 cubic meters of water are pumped back into the Schwarza Basin every second. The Witznau Basin is the lower basin for the Witznau power plant and at the same time the upper basin for the Waldshut power plant .

The power plant has four ternary machine sets with standing waves . The pumps, which are emptied with compressed air, are driven by a Pelton wheel up to synchronism, then a toothed clutch engages between the drive shaft and the pump shaft. The turbine spiral is also emptied using compressed air. The outdoor switchgear is mounted on the locking crown.
