Krahnenberg barracks

Location of the Krahnenberg barracks in Rhineland-Palatinate

The property in Andernach , built in 1937 and named Krahnenberg barracks since November 3, 1967, is the oldest barracks of the Bundeswehr . Here on January 20, 1956, the first soldiers of the newly founded Bundeswehr were welcomed by the then Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer .

history

The barracks was built in 1937 and served until 1945 as Air Force Hospital I / XII "Hermann Göring" . After the end of the Second World War , US troops took over the property on March 9, 1945 and used it as a prisoner and foreign labor camp. Shortly afterwards it was taken over by the French army . She used the property again as a military hospital under the name "André-Curtillet-Lazaret" . From June 1, 1955, it was relocated to a newly built clinic in Koblenz (today's central building of the Bundeswehr central hospital ).

Development of the Bundeswehr

After members of the Blank office determined the property as the first Bundeswehr location on February 28, 1955, renovation work began immediately after the French hospital had moved, and on January 2, 1956, the first 550 undocumented volunteers arrived for service in the three armed forces of the Bundeswehr for training. On July 1, 1956, the troop school Quartiermeistertruppe was set up in the “troop camp” and was later moved to Bremen . Thereupon, on April 1, 1959, the Army Aviation Training Battalion moved into the property and - after it was relocated to Zweibrücken on November 1, 1962 - the 990 Broadcasting Battalion , from which the 850 PSV Battalion emerged on April 1, 1981 , which also served the Bundeswehr from here. Radio station " Radio Andernach " was in operation. In 1984 the barracks were redesigned to their present state through extensive construction work. After the reunion has been held since 1 October 1990, instead of the PSV-850 battalion established Fernmeldebataillon 950 PSYOPS , the 1998 battalion for operational information has been reclassified and renamed. After its relocation to the General Delius barracks in Mayen , the Institute for Military Medical Statistics and Reporting of the Bundeswehr, which had formerly been stationed in Remagen , had been housed in the Krahnenberg barracks from July 1, 2002 , from which the newly established Institute for Preventive Medicine of the Bundeswehr  (InstPrävMedBw) emerged. The organization for follow-up investigations by the German Armed Forces ( ODIN Bw ) is also located in the property today . In 2009 the last remaining wooden barracks were placed under a preservation order; after renovation, an exhibition about the establishment of the Bundeswehr is to be set up there.
