The Institute for Military Medical Statistics and Reporting of the Bundeswehr ( WehrMedStatInstBw ) was decommissioned in September 2017. Its tasks and staff will be taken over by the newly established Institute for Preventive Medicine of the Bundeswehr . The former institute was the successor to the Central Archives for Military Medicine (ZAW). This was set up in 1957, one year after the Bundeswehr was founded. Until February 1, 1965, it formed part of the Wehrmedizinalamt (later the Bundeswehr Medical Service ) and has been an independent institute since then.
From its foundation until 2002, the institute was located in a former boarding school of the Marist Order in Remagen . Due to lack of space and the restructuring of the Bundeswehr, the institute was relocated to the Krahnenberg barracks in Andernach .
In addition to the location in Remagen , various branch offices existed in Kripp , Heimersheim , Mendig , Eich and Bad Breisig until 2002 . In October 1990, the Spechthausen branch in the state of Brandenburg was set up to archive the health records of the National People's Army of the GDR for 10 years by filming them on microfilm . With the relocation of the institute's headquarters, all branch offices were closed and their tasks centralized in Andernach . Later there was only a sub-warehouse of the archive in Eich near Andernach, which has since been housed in newly built halls on the grounds of the Krahnenberg barracks. A new external archive in the Gneisenau barracks in Koblenz was also accessed centrally via the Andernach office.
The Bundeswehr Institute for Military Medical Statistics and Reporting was originally composed of three main areas:
- Medical reporting
- Military medical documentation
- Military medical statistics
In addition to these main areas, the institute took on the tasks of medical assessment and military service damage procedures in 2002, and the area of ODIN Bw / Lung and TBC welfare in 2002. The staff group, with a photo office, registry and reproduction office, as well as the Basics and Development Department, which was mainly responsible for controlling / cost and performance responsibility (KLV) and IT operations, served to support and plan the institute's operations. The Institute for Military Medical Statistics and Reporting of the Bundeswehr collected all medical records from the area of the Bundeswehr that were required to be archived and kept them ready in its archive in a form that was ready for information. It thus guaranteed the legally required retention of medical documents and the processing of medical data. The data collected in the medical facilities and by the medical services of the military substitute system on the state of health of the drafted conscripts and soldiers were evaluated using mathematical-statistical methods and processed into reports. Furthermore, for the further development of medical reporting, drafts of instructions, decrees and service regulations were drawn up for various departments in the Federal Ministry of Defense . In addition to documents about soldiers, the medical records of civilian patients who were treated in the Bundeswehr hospitals or in military hospitals outside Germany were also archived .
