The building of the Kranen-Konvent is one of the oldest preserved brick Gothic buildings in Lübeck's old town and part of the world cultural heritage .

The structure of the building at Kleine Burgstrasse 22 dates back to 1283. The roof structure has been dendrochronologically dated to the year 1283. Its three-aisled cellar with three cross rib vaults is the oldest preserved vaulted cellar in Lübeck. Nevertheless, the representative architectural features of the private secular Gothic buildings in Lübeck are missing , in particular the vertical structure of the simply triangular gable. This holds back relatively modestly. The house was originally built as a beguinage on the basis of a foundation by the Lübeck citizen Wilkinus Crane and was structurally remodeled during the Renaissance . About 16 to 20 beguines found a home in the house. The proportions of the windows are from the 18th and 19th centuries. The two side wings on the courtyard side are accessible via the gardens of the property of the former branch of the Teutonic Order (1268–1806) to the right of the crane convent and date from the 14th to 16th centuries. From the end of the 18th century, the Kranen-Konvent was used as a poor house for women and an infirmary, and in the 20th century as an old people's home and advice center for the social welfare office. In the 1980s, in contrast to the buildings of the neighboring Pockenhof, the building of the Kranen-Konvent was not included in the renovation and urban development funding of Block 96 in Lübeck's inner city.

Until May 2010, the building of the former crane convent in the basement was used by the Brockensammlung Lübeck association as a warehouse and sales building. Used furniture and furnishings were collected here and given to citizens in need. The Brockensammlung now has its quarters in a listed former gym on the north side of Lübeck's main train station.

In 2009, the building was considered by the Federal Minister for Construction, Wolfgang Tiefensee, with 2.2 million euros in funding totaling 150 million euros for the German World Heritage Sites . A number of classrooms were created for the orientation level of the neighboring Ernestin School . The cellar was converted into a cafeteria after archaeological excavations and the necessary renovation of the monument. Such intensive use, especially of the cellar, is viewed critically from a conservation point of view. The Citizens' Initiative Rettet Lübeck (BIRL) fought for the careful use of the historically and structurally significant cellar, which consists of Byzantine hanging domes, and against the planned use as a heated recreation room, which could result in accelerated damage to the historic brick masonry due to rising damp and crystallizing salts .
