The hospital Brothers of Mercy (sometimes called Brothers of Charity Hospital) is one of the Brothers of Charity run hospital of I.  level of care in the Munich district of Nymphenburg . It is the academic teaching hospital of the Technical University of Munich and the teaching clinic of the German Academy for Nutritional Medicine.

history

Until 1945

As early as the 18th century, the order led the St. Maximilian Hospital at Sendlinger Tor . However, the hospital and the attached medical school were dissolved as part of the secularization .

It was not until 1916 that the Order of the Brothers of Mercy was able to acquire the Controlor restaurant near the Nymphenburg Palace and convert it into a small hospital. The tenant of the restaurant was able to continue running it until October 3, 1917, before the Order took over the building entirely on October 7, 1917 and converted it into a hospital. The first patient was admitted on December 23, 1918. In the spring of 1919, the number of beds was set at 58 by the police department, which in the first few decades were reserved exclusively for men and were mainly used for urological care . In order to improve the occupancy rate and thus the income, an occupancy agreement was signed with the Bavarian State Police in 1921 . In 1931 the order was able to acquire the neighboring building and increase the number of beds to 180.

With the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, the hospital was rededicated as a reserve hospital. An air raid on December 21, 1942 destroyed most of the hospital, but emergency operations could be maintained.

From 1945

After the war, the worst damage was repaired and operations resumed. In 1955 the hospital was completely rebuilt or renovated. As a result of this renovation, the number of beds rose to 370. Two years later, a new hospital church was built. In 1966 the construction of another ward block, new operating theaters, several function rooms and a staff dormitory could begin. In the same year, 120 beds were leased to the Bundeswehr (until 1985).

The palliative care unit was opened in 1991 and expanded to 32 beds in 2008. Between 1990 and 2003 numerous buildings were renovated or converted. In January 2010 a new complex was opened, which offers space for the new day clinic, additional operating theaters, the administration and a medical center. In February 2009 the first intestinal center was opened at the Munich Tumor Center at the Barmherzige Brüder Hospital.
