The Krasiński Palace (Polish : Pałac Krasińskich ), also known as the Palace of the Republic , is a 17th century Baroque palace in Warsaw . It is in the immediate vicinity of the Warsaw Uprising Monument .

history

The castle was built by Tylman van Gameren for the Krasinski magnate family from 1677 to 1683. The Krasińskis laid out a large baroque garden to the west of the palace and created a considerable art collection in the palace with works by Albrecht Dürer , Antonio da Correggio , Rembrandt van Rijn and Peter Paul Rubens . Andreas Schlüter carried out the interior decoration, in particular reliefs depicting the heroic deeds of the Roman patrician Marcus Valerius . In 1764, when Stanislaus August Poniatowski was elected King of Poland, the Republic of Poland acquired the palace and, after some renovations, used it as an administration and court building. The garden was opened as a park to the Warsaw population in 1768. In 1929, among other things, a meeting was held in the State Court to prepare a charge against the resigned Minister Gabriel Czechowicz , who had allowed the state budget to be illegally exceeded. After the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, the German Wehrmacht destroyed the palace. Rebuilt in the post-war period based on the paintings by Bernardo Bellotto , the palace now serves as part of the national library. The neo-classical Badeni Palace , which was also destroyed in the war, was not rebuilt.

In the tympanum of the north gable there are sculptures by Andreas Schlüter .
