The M 400 C series from Krauss-Maffei is a standard-gauge shunting locomotive for medium-sized shunting and mainline services with a diesel-hydraulic drive , around 400 hp and three axles ( wheel arrangement  C). It was developed in the early 1960s.

development

The locomotive belongs to the fourth post-war generation of Krauss Maffei locomotives. The M in their designation roughly corresponds to the engine power.

The locomotives were developed from the previously delivered second and third generation machines.

The locomotives were mainly developed for industrial companies to replace the last steam locomotives there. Four locomotives with an engine output of 350 hp and an explosion-proof design were delivered to the company

The first two locomotives delivered in 1965 also had an engine output of 350 hp and went to MAN and the Klöckner-Mannstaedt-Werke in Troisdorf . The remaining machines had an engine output of 400 hp, one of which went to the Moselbahn , three remained with the manufacturer and were rented out.

technology

The locomotive belongs to a series of locomotives with compatible components. The locomotive has a central driver's cab with a larger front section for the diesel engine and a smaller one for the auxiliary operations. The front porch is beveled to improve visibility for the driver. The rigid locomotive frame rests on the axles by means of rubber disc springs and is designed as an outer frame. In the front part of the driver's cab there is a switch cabinet with the operating elements for controlling the locomotive on both sides. The ascent is placed behind the controls.

The machine system consists of a six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from MAN, which could be set to either 350 hp or 400 hp, with 40 hp being required for the auxiliary operations. The engine gave its power to a flow reversing gear, each of which had a flow converter for one direction of travel. A mechanical multi-step gear with pneumatic switching was connected to this fluid transmission. Each wheel of the locomotive is braked individually with self-adjusting disc brakes.

The locomotive was rented to the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft , where it stayed for half a year. Then it was rented to Hibernia AG for three months until it was sold to the Moselbahn at the end of 1969. The locomotive stayed for 15 years, had reserve locomotive status, and was used for staff training. In 1987 the locomotive was sold to the Rütgerswerke in Duisburg , where it received a radio remote control . The locomotive stayed here for over 30 years. The last database entry dates from 2019.
