The Potsdam-Mittelmark district archive is the municipal archive of the Brandenburg district of Potsdam-Mittelmark . As a cultural institution, it is responsible for the archives of the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark, the old districts of Belzig , Potsdam-Land and Brandenburg-Land as well as the cities and municipalities of the district that are obliged to offer them. There is a spatial and organizational community with the administrative archives of the district, which means that their documents , which are to be stored for a limited period, are also kept in the district archive's magazine.

history

The history of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district archive can be traced back to 1951. With the order to set up city and district archives on February 26, 1951, the districts of the GDR were instructed to set up archives. In view of the imminent territorial reform of 1952 , this arrangement was probably not implemented immediately . As part of this reform, u. a. the district of Zauch-Belzig, which has existed since 1817, was divided into the districts of Belzig, Potsdam-Land and Brandenburg-Land. When exactly these three circles then set up their own archives, it can no longer be determined with certainty, as the records in the existing files are very incomplete. With the territorial reform in the state of Brandenburg in 1993 , the three districts were merged to form the new district of Potsdam-Mittelmark. As a result, a new district archive was created from the archives of the three former districts.

First, the archives of the three old districts were housed in the premises of the former Brandenburg-Land district archive, which was located in the independent city of Brandenburg (Havel). The administrative records to be kept for a limited period of time have been deposited in the former Belzig district archive. The premises of the Potsdam-Land district archive located in the independent city of Potsdam were no longer used by the new district archive. In 2001, all stocks were merged in newly built premises at the Belzig location within sight of Eisenhardt Castle .

Archive rooms

Magazine with mobile shelves in the district archive Potsdam-Mittelmark

The district archive is housed in the basement of a building belonging to the district administration. A reading room with ten workstations is available. In the reading room, part of the archive library is in open access . The archives and administrative documents are stored in three magazines with a total area of approx. 800 m², spatially separated from the reading room. The magazines, equipped with mobile shelving systems , have a capacity of approx. 7,000 running meters . Currently around 6,500 running meters are occupied, of which around 5,000 running meters are from the administration archive.

tasks

The tasks of the district archive are specified by the Brandenburg Archives Act (BbgArchivG). In essence, public archival material must be identified, assessed , accepted, recorded , kept and made available for use. In addition, there is advice to the cities and municipalities in the district that are obliged to provide information on managing and securing their documents. This affects those cities and municipalities that do not maintain their own public archive within the meaning of the BbgArchivG. Furthermore, contributions to Brandenburg history as well as home and local history are to be written through the archive, which in practice hardly occurs due to limited free capacities.

Stocks

The archive holdings are mainly composed of the official records of the district administration of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district and the three old districts of Belzig, Potsdam-Land and Brandenburg-Land. In addition, there are unofficial records, the collection items and the archive library. Since district archives in GDR territory were not set up until the 1950s, documents from the period before 1950 can be found here in a rather small amount. As a rule, state archives, e.g. B. the Brandenburg State Main Archive ( BLHA ), the appropriate contact person for questions regarding the current district area for the period up to 1950. Official and unofficial archive material was usually not created with the aim of publication or transmission. It is remnants of administrative actions, business activities or other communication between people. Since official or unofficial archive material cannot provide a complete picture of the development of the district, the collection is supplemented by the collection material . This includes u. a. Objects that were intended for publication in the first place. In this regard, the items in the collection can overlap with the contents of the archive library. The archive holdings have a volume of approx. 1,500 running meters. Some of the archive holdings can be researched on the Internet. The district archive has not yet been able to offer digitized archival material or a digital archive .

Archive library

Zauch-Belziger Kreisblatt, June 16, 1888

The library of the district archive is a special scientific library . The focus of the collection is on literature relating to the Potsdam-Mittelmark district and its legal predecessors. The collection of local chronicles is probably the largest of its kind in the district. Books on the history of Brandenburg are collected to a much lesser extent. Another focus of the collection are newspapers and magazines. Currently three regional editions of the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung (Fläming Echo, Brandenburger Kurier, Potsdamer Tageszeitung) are being collected. Of the historical newspapers, the Zauch-Belziger Kreisblatt is used regularly, especially by chroniclers. Mention should also be made of a large collection of statistics from GDR times, official gazettes and historical legal texts, e.g. B. the Reichsgesetzblatt from 1871, and specialist literature on archiving.

use

The use of the archive material is based on the regulations of the Brandenburg Archives Act (BbgArchivG) of 1994. Any person with a legitimate interest may view archive material. This right of inspection can be restricted by the archive e.g. B. due to current protection periods or for reasons of conservation. The archives statutes regulate further details, whereby the services of the district archive are chargeable within the scope of use.

It is usually used on site in the reading room or, alternatively, in the form of verbal or written inquiries that are processed by the archive. After the civil status registers were handed over from 2009, the number of users has increased massively. Almost 200 people now visit the archive each year. In addition, around 800 inquiries are answered annually. The greatest interest is in civil status registers, mostly for genealogical research or to clarify legal issues. Chroniclers also regularly inspect documents.

A distinction is to be made between the use of the archived material and the inspection of documents of the district administration that are to be kept for a limited period of time, e.g. B. Construction files of the lower construction supervision . Although these documents are usually stored in the archive's warehouse, they are not subject to the Brandenburg Archives Act and can therefore not be published by the archive. Requests to inspect these documents, etc. a. on the basis of the File Inspection and Information Access Act (AIG), must be submitted to the relevant authorities. In case of doubt, applicants will be informed by the archive about the legal situation.
