Bad Dürrenberg district moat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bad Dürrenberg district moat is a Late Bronze Age- Early Iron Age circular moat near Bad Dürrenberg in the Saale district , Saxony-Anhalt . It is located about 2 km east of the Saale on slightly sloping terrain.

Research history

The facility was discovered during an aerial survey by the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology of Saxony-Anhalt . In 2005 a test excavation was carried out by the Institute for Art History and Archeology of Europe at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg under the direction of André Spatzier . The excavation was carried out on two areas: one of 18 × 11 m in the northeast and one of 24 × 3 m in the northern interior.

Findings

The facility consists of a simple oval trench with a diameter between 40 m and 46 m. It has a 1 m wide opening to the northeast. The south-eastern quarter of the circular moat was probably recently destroyed by agricultural activity. The trench filled with humus has a depth of between 0.7 m and 0.9 m and a width of between 1.4 m and 1.8 m.

During a geomagnetic investigation prior to the excavation, numerous pits and post holes were found in the northern interior area, which were then partially excavated.

Finds

Almost all the finds come from the circular trench. Bones, flint artifacts (chips and blades) and ceramic shards came to light. The latter, however, can only be generally identified as Late Bronze Age. The pits were largely empty. Only a bone fragment could be found here.

Dating

Using the radiocarbon method, some of the boils could be dated to 1210–920 cal. BC, which corresponds to the late Bronze Age. A bone from the upper trench filling was dated to 670-410 cal. BC, which suggests the possibility that the facility was still in use in the early Iron Age.
