The Cretan stendellum ( Epipactis cretica ) is a plant species from the genus of the stendelwurzen ( Epipactis ) in the orchid family (Orchidaceae).

description

The Cretan stendril is a perennial rhizome plant. It reaches heights of growth of 10 to 40 centimeters. The 2 to 5 leaves are leathery, dark green, purple on the inside and more or less upright. The upper ones encompass the stems. The inflorescence axis is glabrous or sparsely hairy. The front part of the lip is heart-shaped, not turned back and has 2 elongated, furrowed transverse ridges at the base. The edge is pink. The hind limb is dark olive (brown) inside. The sepals and the lateral petals are 8 to 9 millimeters long, curved forward, strongly bent and greenish.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

Occurrence

The Cretan stendrums are endemic to Crete . It only grows in psiloritis - and in the Dikti Mountains in shady mixed forests at altitudes of 700 to 1500 meters.

Systematics

Epipactis cretica was first described in 1980 by Johann Kalopissis and Karl Robatsch .

This species is identified by the World Checklist of Orchidaceae with Epipactis troodi H. Lindb. from the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus and the Amanos Mountains in Turkey, despite clear differences, and would then have to bear this older name. Apart from this checklist entry, this view is not supported by any scientific publication; Epipactis cretica is accepted as an independent species in other current literature.
