Krustpils ( German Kreutzburg ) is a district of Jēkabpils in Latvia , which lies on the right (northern) bank of the Daugava . Krustpils historically belonged to Livonia , while Jēkabpils historically belonged to Courland .

Kreutzburg Castle

history

It was first mentioned in writing in 1318, when the Livonian Order took the Kreutzburg built by the Bishop of Riga . A place was created around the castle, which the Polish Stephan Báthory lent to Nicolaus Korff in 1585 . The von Korff family remained the owners of Krustpils until 1920.

The place belonged to Poland-Lithuania from 1561 to 1772 , while the opposite Jēkabpils was part of the Duchy of Courland and Zemgale . The difference between the Latgalian and Selic dialects of the inhabitants on both sides of the Daugava still exists today.

During the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) there was a camp here for Turkish prisoners of war, many of whom settled here permanently. A Turkish cemetery is today Asotes ( '38.6 "56 ° 29  N , 25 ° 54' 58.8"  O ) to visit. Economic upswing followed the opening of the Riga - Dünaburg railway line in 1861 and the Ventspils - Ribinska line in 1904. In 1920, Krustpils received city rights. In 1932 a sugar factory was opened. In 1935 Krustpils had 3,658 inhabitants, 53% of whom were Latvians. In 1962, Krustpils was finally incorporated into the city of Jēkabpils.

Krustpils novads

In the course of an administrative reform, six municipalities north of the Daugava of the former Jekabpils district merged to form one administrative district (Krustpils novads). The administration building is located in the Krustpils district of the republic city of Jekabpils, which itself does not belong to the district.

In 2010 there were 6680 registered residents.
