The wayside shrine in Gaibach

The crucifixion shrine from 1579 is a torture in the Volkach district of Gaibach in Lower Franconia. It was built as a so-called monolith shrine in the course of the Counter Reformation .

history

The so-called monolithic wayside shrines shaped the region around Schweinfurt during the Counter Reformation . The Würzburg prince-bishops promoted the erection of these religious monuments throughout the diocese. The reason for this was, among other things, the spread of Lutheran teaching and the turning away from the old faith by the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt. The wayside shrine is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .

The Gaibach wayside shrine was created by a stonemason who worked seven more tortures in the area around Schweinfurt. It was probably about Hans Östreicher, who also worked in Gramschatz and Egenhausen . Marter was created in 1579 under the rule of Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . The wayside shrine was poorly restored, so that today there is no more inscription about the donors.

description

The monolithic wayside shrines all have a similar appearance. The rectangular, massive columns merge into a block-like headboard. All of them were made from a single stone. The base has a square base, which is often heavily bevelled in the upper area. Most of the sticks are decorated with coats of arms . In a large majority the depictions of crucifixion scenes predominate in the essay.

The Gaibacher wayside shrine depicts a crucifixion of Christ . St. Catherine of Alexandria is shown in the right cartouche , an inscription was carved on the left, but it can no longer be seen today. Originally a coat of arms was attached below the top, it has also been removed. A lettering on the left part of the column has been largely destroyed, today only the letters "HOS REIK" (probably Hans Östreicher) can be deciphered.
