On the way to the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten in Volkach , a town in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen (Bavaria), there are remains of an older Way of the Cross. A younger way of the cross connects directly to this and accompanies the ascent to the church.

Elder way of the cross

The older Way of the Cross was modeled as a realistic Passion Path of Jesus , the length of the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem and began at the town hall . The way in Jerusalem from Pilate's house was measured in double steps. Only three of the Stations of the Cross, which were built in the 16th century, have survived and are dated to 1520 and 1521 respectively. The scenes are badly weathered and were touched up during restoration work in 1909 and 1979. Gothic minuscules under the first station describe the scene: "Hie Vil nider Maria in gros vmacht da ir Jhesvs a cross against / brought cc Schridt von Pilatvs respected 15_1".

The scenes are mounted on base structures, which are closed at the top by a pent roof with hollow pan and ridge tiles. They show the meeting of Mary with Jesus (1521), Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross (1520) and Veronica gives Jesus the handkerchief (1521). The latter station had to be rotated 180 ° in 1985, as it was facing the path with the back. All scenes were designed according to Michael Wolgemut's templates . The master is unknown. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation registers the old way of the cross under the number D-6-75-174-143.

Younger Way of the Cross

The new way of the cross leads through the eponymous vineyard and has fourteen stations in a much denser form. It was created in 1864 and goes back to the Franziska Vornberger Foundation. The reliefs are protected by quarry stone chapels. This path is classified under the number D-6-75-174-146 of the Bavarian State Office.
