location

It is located immediately west of Dorfstraße at the address Dorfstraße 48 in the churchyard of the Miltern village church .

Design and history

The war memorial was inaugurated on October 11, 1919, according to other information in 1920, and was erected in memory of the citizens of Miltern who died in the First World War . There was a large relief depicting Saint George facing the street . The relief, made of sandstone , showed George riding a horse and killing a dragon with a spear . At the end of the Second World War , Walter Berth and another resident from Miltern, Werner Behrendt from Bindfelde , were in the run-up to the arrival of US troopsand Otto Behrendt from Tangermünde destroyed the relief. Other data indicate the period after 1945 as the period of destruction. The figure of Saint George was chiseled out together with the sword and spear. Today only outlines and fragments can be seen. At the same time, the original inscription probably also disappeared. The head of St. George was hidden by Elfriede Behrendt in her house in the attic. After the political change in 1989 , she is said to have taken her head to West Germany. According to other sources, the head was found on a piece of land and taken away by the former West German owner.

At the top of the monument facing the street, an image of an iron cross can be seen. In the lower area there is a plaque with the inscription:
