The Bremen Crime Library is a reference library of the Bremen City Library . The detective novels in their holdings are all works written in German after 1965.

General

Since 2000, the crime library has been the first and so far the only one of its kind in Germany to document all German-language crime literature since 1965, as well as secondary literature and magazines.

It has over 4,000 titles including autographed first editions of novels, biographies of Edgar Wallace and Patricia Highsmith , essays on serial killers and the history of organized crime . In 2009 she was also given the entire East German crime collection from the estate of crime writer Wolfgang Mittmann , who died in 2006 .

The crime library is housed in a room on the 2nd floor of the central library in downtown Bremen . It is a reference library , so no books can be borrowed, only read on site. Events such as regular readings and book premieres also take place here. The room has a special atmosphere thanks to its design with wood-paneled walls, a red sofa, comfortable armchairs and an implied fireplace corner.

The crime library was initiated by the Bremen writer Jürgen Alberts with the support of the association of German-speaking crime authors “Das Syndikat” and German crime publishers.

In 2009, the Bremen Crime Library was recognized by the Germany - Land of Ideas initiative as a special contribution to Germany's cultural landscape and as a "selected location" in the "Land of Ideas", which recognizes ingenuity, creative passion and visionary thinking.

Since 2012, a multimedia room installation entitled “Arsen & Die” has been regularly presented in the crime library. Uta Krauß-Leichert and Timon Gehrhardt (HAW) and Erwin Miedtke (Bremen City Library) was designed and implemented. In 2012, the project was awarded the 1st Karl H. Ditze Prize 2012 of the HAW Hamburg, endowed with 3,000 euros. In addition to the independence and creativity of the students in developing and implementing the concept, the jury was impressed by the high demands placed on the project management.

There are two other crime libraries in Europe in France and Sweden.
