Kristián Barbuščák (born February 20, 1977 in Bratislava , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak football player. Today he is the goalkeeping coach at the German Bundesliga club FC Augsburg .

Career

As a player

He started his career in the elite squad of the Slovan Bratislava Sports School . Up to the age of 15 he trained and played there as a goalkeeper. After graduating from high school, he made the leap to Germany, after winning a selection tournament near Fürth in 1992. He started training in Munich and played for the FC Bayern youth team at the same time . Due to the great competition, he moved to the youth of Lazio in 1997 . Due to the EU regulations on foreigners, however, he was seldom in the squad and therefore moved to Austria Vienna in 1998 . A further transfer followed shortly afterwards, this time to the Grasshopper Club Zurich . After only a year, he finally dared to leap across the Atlantic to the New York Metro Stars . Due to several serious knee injuries, he had to end his career there prematurely at the age of only 23 years.

As a trainer

After his active career, it was clear to Barbuscak early on that he wanted to continue to be active in football as a coach. Shortly after his injury, he took on a job as a youth coach at TSV Schwabhausen . Two years later he became an assistant coach at SC Eintracht Freising. At the same time he started his first job as a goalkeeping coach at the DFB base in Freising. In 2008 he ventured to the United Arab Emirates and became the goalkeeping coach of the youth of the Al-Wasl Sport Club . In 2011 he became the goalkeeping coach of the Kazakh national football team under Miroslav Beránek . In 2012, he worked for Viktoria Žižkov in the Czech Republic , where he looked after the goalkeepers under Roman Nadvornik. His next coaching station should also be in the Czech Republic. In 2013 he moved to FC Zbrojovka Brno and head coach Vaclav Kotal. A year later, Barbuscak's last change for the time being followed, when he took the position of goalkeeping coach at the then third division club SSV Jahn Regensburg . Despite relegation to the regional league under Christian Brand , Barbuscak remained loyal to the club beyond the 2014/15 season. This was not only followed by the direct promotion to the 3rd division with Heiko Herrlich, but also the march through to the 2nd Bundesliga and even relegation in the following 2017/18 season under the leadership of Achim Beierlorzer . Thus, SSV Jahn Regensburg represents the longest station in Barbuscak's coaching career so far. For the 2020/21 season he moved to Bundesliga club FC Augsburg to strengthen the coaching team around Heiko Herrlich, with whom he had already worked at SSV Jahn Regensburg.
